It is a disease we care passionately about. Stuart Callister, who owns Severn Vale Care, is an ambassador for Dementia UK. He talks at local events and tries to educate the community about this illness.

Dementia is a broad term for several conditions that affect the brain. Alzheimers disease is the most common form of dementia affecting over 50% of people diagnosed. Different types of dementia can occur when brain cells become damaged. A diagnosis of dementia can result in problems with memory, speaking, thinking, personality, and other body functions.

As we live longer the number of cases of dementia is likely to increase. This means that many of us will have to care for a parent with dementia at home. We cannot cure dementia, but we can manage it.

Caring for a person with dementia can be an extremely stressful experience leading to feelings of guilt, frustration, and anxiety. In this situation families often consider a range of dementia care services. This could include places like day care centers and support groups. As the stages of dementia progress, families often think about getting more specialist help.

It is possible to manage dementia without having to move into a care home. Caring for someone with dementia at home can help a loved one lead as fulfilled a life as is possible. Finding the appropriate level of support from diagnosis depending on individual needs can make this possible.

For people living with dementia staying at home can make loved ones feel safer and happier. This can improve their overall well-being and mental health without the need to consider residential care.
