What is specialist care?
Specialist Care is designed to address the unique needs of people who require specialised assistance in order to help them live safely, comfortably and independently in their own homes. Through expert, condition-specific support that is tailored to the individual’s requirements, it is possible to maintain independence, dignity and a good quality of life whilst managing a health condition.
What is the difference between specialist care and complex care?
Both are types of support provided in a person’s home but the main difference is that they cater to different needs.
Specialist Home care tends to be focused towards people who have specific medical conditions like dementia, Parkinson’s or stroke recovery. The focus is on managing the condition
effectively, ensuring that the person has the best possible care in their own home.
Complex Home care, is designed for people with more severe or multiple heath issues. This could be a combination of health issues from physical, mental, or emotional challenges, that require a higher level of support. This could mean managing medical equipment such as ventilators and usually requires ongoing, co-ordinated care with a range of health care professionals.
The key difference is that specialist home care focuses on a specific condition, whilst complex home care is for people with more serious conditions or multiple health needs that require a broader, more intensive level of support.

Who is specialist care for?
Specialist care is focused towards individuals that have a medical condition. This could be neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) or Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Or it could be someone with a physical disability, long term health condition or recovering from a stroke. There is a wide range conditions that specialist care at home can help support.
The following groups are examples of the types of conditions we can help with:
Dementia Care
Dementia care is one of the most well known types of specialist care. The condition can be complex in nature, causing memory loss, confusion and behavioural changes. These effects can be distressing for all involved. With the right support in place to help someone maintain their daily routine, ensure that they are safe around their home and provide comfort and reassurance, it can really help everyone’s daily lives.
Parkinson's Disease Care
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition that can cause tremors, stiffness and difficulties with movement and balance. A care professional can help with daily support and activities such as, exercises to help support movement and medication management. The aim is to help someone manage the daily challenges of Parkinson’s disease.
Post-Operative Care
Operations can be required at any stage of our lives and can take weeks or even months to recover fully. After being discharged from hospital some people may need specialist care to support them whilst they recover at home. This could be helping with mobility, personal care such as taking a shower, meal preparation, medication management and general assistance.
Palliative and End of Life care
The final stages of life are different for everyone. However, we all need help with managing the physical symptoms, as well as knowing that someone is there for companionship and emotional
support. The focus is on providing comfort and pain management.
